Pamporovo
Pamporovo is located at the foot of Mount Snezhanka (1926 m) in the Rhodopi Mountains. A legend says that Orpheus was playing on his lyre to search for his beloved Eurydice in the Rhodopi Mountains. The resort is situated at 1650 meters above sea level. It is 240 km far from Sofia, 85 km from Plovdiv, 16 km from Smolyan, 12 km from Chepelare and some 35 away from Devin.
Pamporovo is a modern ski resort known as the sunniest and southernmost ski resort in Europe. During the high season from December to May the sunny days in Pamporovo exceed 120 in number. The name of the resort comes from the Turkish word for train (pampor). Raicho Belev, a merchant from the town of Smolyan, led his convoys of mules carrying goods through the mountains. They way they followed one after the other made them look like the wagons of a train. The word pampor was the basis of coining the name for the resort.
